Type Locality and Naming

The type section is lies along Shangbaochong−Zhangshuwan, about 24 km northeast of Liling, Hunan. It was named by by Li Pucheng in 1986, and formally cited in Regional Geology of Hunan Province in 1988.


Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone and Claystone. Dominated by gray-white and light-gray quartz sandstone, sandy shale and black shale, locally intercalated with coal streaks. As thick as 337.7 m at the type section, and generally 100−200 m in other places, with the maximum exceeding 400 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformable contact with the underlying Shangbaochong Fm

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the overlying Zimenqiao Fm

Regional extent

Distributed along Yiyang, Ningxiang, Changsha, Liuyang and Liling in northern Central Hunan.

Rich in fossil Plants Rhodeopteridium hsianghsiangensis, Sublepidodendron mirabile, Neuropteris gigantea, Cordaites principalis, Adiantites sp., etc.
